Elegance and harmony

Inaugurated by Prince Andrew, Duke of York, the British Embassy in Algiers overlooks the deep blue of the Mediterranean. Its architecture of concentric-circles matches the sloping contours of this highly residential district. Curves and harmony are the predominant features, with walls in architectural concrete, but also gardens, a swimming pool and an arrangement of century-old palm trees – carefully moved from their original site – preserving breath-taking views over the bay. The modern construction blends surprisingly well with its site, the result of a fluid balance of forms, its sandy colour and the understated elegance of the materials used. Built in tiered layers next to the Ambassador’s Neo-Moorish villa, it highlights the latter’s aristocratic charm.

Designed by architects John McAslan & Partners, this is the second British Embassy project in North Africa after the one in Rabat.
